Newborn Photography FAQ

What type of photography do you do?

I would say my style is largely styled newborn photography, with a hint of lifestyle and fine art flair throughout. I am a perfectionist and strive to capture the essence of my newborn baby clients. I do love to capture the bond between newborn baby and parents together, so I always invite parents to have family portraits during their photography experience. When I photograph your newborn baby, I take my time to get their little fingers beautifully placed and facial expressions to pure bliss. It does take around a few minutes to get newborn babies into these positions both comfortably. and safely. I love capturing the flakey skin, the curled up toes, those beautiful little lashes, the details that change so very quickly. I also love capturing sibling portraits, both candidly and styled. My portraits of siblings are fun, timeless and beautiful portraits to ensure that your photographs will last many life times.

Why are your newborn shoots much shorter in length then most other photographers?

2 factors here, firstly, I am a highly experienced photographer who specializes in newborn photography, I work with newborns weekly, and understand what your newborn can and can not do. Having photographed as many newborns as I have in my career, I have designed a flow of poses and positions which just seems to work for newborns and to produce the greatest number of proofs without moving baby too much.
Secondly, I am in the honest belief that your newborn whilst so little is best to not be away from mum for so long during those first few important weeks. Generally the newborn photography shoot will take one sleep cycle for baby (most newborns will sleep 1 to 1 and 1/2 hours maximum at a time, before their next feed)
Remember, your newborn is a real life, living human being. Do you really want your photographer photographing them for 3 to 5 hours at a time?

Do you offer pregnancy & newborn package?

No! We understand that your product purchase for each shoot (pregnancy and newborn) will vary, so why should you fit in a one size fits all box!? We offer a booking fee for each shoot you book and the option to purchase a package or a la carte per photography shoot.
For your pregnancy you may want a different sized print collection compared to your newborn and family shoots.
Something to consider before your commit to purchasing what the photographer says you should have and not what you want!

Can I give you a list of shots we want on the day?

I ask that families avoid providing me with ‘lists’ of shots they want. Purely as their newborn baby may not do some poses at all. However, during your pre session consultation, I will discuss and plan with you the styles for your newborn photography shoot to ensure your gallery suits your styles and taste.

Do you work with an assistant?

Not typically. My rule is; if baby can’t do the position without an extra set of hands, then it’s not safe for baby to do so. I do however get the parents to assist with some images when required.

Do you travel?

Yes! I am more then happy to travel nationally and internationally for photography portrait bookings.

Can Allysha Come To Me, I am located in Melbourne

Yes! Allysha can most certainly visit your home and offer a life style newborn photography experience. This is a journalistic approach in capturing your day and life of being a family.
Styled portrait newborn photography experience is strictly studio only. Due to the large amount of equipment required to perform a styled, creative and artistic newborn photography session, it is vital Allysha has the ability of controlling the room temperature, access to all of her props and lighting equipment. In private homes, this is not possible.

Your Home vs. My Studio

Allysha has a fully equipped home based photography studio which has everything she needs for your creative and styled newborn photography portrait photo shoot. Room temperature for newborn babies is vital, as babies can get a chill easily. Allysha has the ability of maintaining the ideal room temperature for your newborn baby. Allysha is a studio light and natural light photographer, so lighting is never a concern

How long does it take to get our products and images?

On the day of your photography shoot, you will be given a collection date for your product. Purchase orders where large frames are purchased (20×30 inches and larger) will be delivered to your home directly. Canvas orders, prints, albums etc are collected from the studio.

How many pictures will we get to proof?

The number of photographs taken depends on many things – how your newborn baby is on the day, how many set ups we get through (typically 2-3) and if we are doing sibling / family portraits also. Typically a purchasing gallery is from between 25-50 images.

Do we get to keep the negatives?

I provide your purchased, edited digital files (the digital equivalent of negatives). When the files are released to you they may be used for personal use only. I do retain the copyright to the images and the right to use them for promotional purposes, competition, professional review, and so on. The contract acts as a written release that will allow you to make unlimited personal prints and copies for your friends and families.

Can we upload our photos to Facebook once we get the files?

Yes! Facebook is a wonderful way to share your photos. As stated in the contract, you may use your images for personal use only. If you want to share them on Facebook make sure you put “” as a comment or caption under each photo and please don’t crop or alter the photo in any way.

Do we get all the raw, unedited files from the day?

No, these files are not available for viewing or purchase. This is a lot like asking a restaurant to give you the leftover ingredients used to make your dinner. The images selected for editing and final delivery reflect my high standards and everything else is not archived in the studio.

I see some people have more images than others. Why is that?

Simply put, some families purchase larger collections, albums, wall installations and so forth

What do you charge?

All packages are custom made for each individual family so you can get exactly what you want (and not a whole bunch of stuff you aren’t interested in!) I would love to hear from you and all about what you are looking for so that we can customize a package to fit you. Please fill out this contact form and I will give you a phone call to chat about your photography requirements.

How Soon Should I book

Allysha’s clients frequently book in at 12-16 weeks of pregnancy. This ensures she can personalize your newborn photo shoot to the colours and styles you prefer.

Last Minute Bookings

Walk in appointments are not available, however Allysha will always do her best to fit you and your newborn baby in. Please call Allysha direct on 0409005122 if you have delivered your newborn baby already.

The Best Age

This is a hard question to answer, so here is a guide for photographing your pregnancy / baby

Ideally between 30-38 weeks pregnant.
Tip: best time for your pregnancy photography is when your belly is nice and round.
Between 5-10 days your newborn baby is sleepy and curly
Between 11-21 days your newborn will have a strong startle reflect but will still pose into the curly newborn poses
between 22-35 days your newborn will be very strong at this age and will be able to have some eye open and some sleepy photographs. posing into the newborn poses isn’t going to always be possible, however you may be lucky to get 1-2 poses
over 5 weeks of age ~ we would recommend waiting until your baby is a bit older and able to hold their head up and have some solid awake time. aT 5 WEEKS YOUR NEWBORN BABY RESEMBLES A STAR FISH ~ THEY LAY DOWN AND WILL HAVE A STRONG STARTLE REFLEX.
3-5 months: baby is able to lay on belly, hold head up for a short period of time. Baby may start to give smiles at this age. Baby enjoys laying on back and interacting and gives many funny and cute facial expressions.
6-8 months: Your baby is now able to lay on belly and hold head up comfortably, at 7-8 months your baby will be able to sit for a short period of time with assistance. Your baby will be giving lots of smiles, facial expressions and interaction.
9-12 months: Your baby can now sit, clap, smile and lay on belly for a short period of time. Your baby may even start to be able to stand up with assistance at 11 months of age.
